For those of you that do not know me, I am Ashton Clark. James asked me to write a post, on a topic of my choosing, to be published on Wednesday. I was thrilled by the gracious offer extended to me and jumped at the opportunity. Thank you, James, for allowing me the opportunity to write for your blog and thank you, reader, for the time you have taken to devote to the reading of my thoughts. I hope you find them thought-provoking and God-glorifying. I have chosen to write about the influence of Satan in Western Culture’s women’s clothing.
This may seem like a bit of an overstatement coming from a man. “What right have you to discuss these issues?” you may be asking. “You aren’t a woman, so you don’t get a say!” may be another charge leveled against me. My response to these allegations: I am a Christian. I am greatly concerned for the well-being of my brothers’ hearts, and I hope that my sisters will see that concern and begin to share in it. If you think that men have no right to speak to the things of women, I don’t know what to say to you. Consideration of these things is not exclusive to women.
My premise is simply thus: God cursed woman in the Garden, not only with painful child-birth, but also with a desire for control over men. Satan intends to capitalize on this. (read Genesis 3:16)
Prior to the Fall of mankind into sin, Adam and Eve lived together in sinless harmony. Eve was content to listen to Adam, and Adam should have been content to lead Eve. After the Fall, one of the effects of sin was that woman’s desires now ran contrary to man’s. Gone were the days of harmonious living. In their stead, were disarray and discontentment. Satan was successful in tempting Eve. Regardless of your view of complementarianism, the Bible makes it very clear that Satan very much wanted to speak with her and not Adam. Paul says it is because she is the weaker vessel. This reveals my main point in this article: The Devil despises masculinity.
Masculinity opposes Rome to her face. Masculinity stormed the beaches of Normandy. Masculinity built a nation from the blood and ashes of a Revolution. Masculinity leads. Femininity follows. Masculinity is one of humanity’s greatest weapons. It is a thing to be celebrated, not marginalized. This is not to say that femininity is a bad thing, merely that it was not created for leadership. This is why Satan wants women to lead so badly.
Fast-forward to present-day. Look around you. What do you see in American Pop Culture? You see a lot of skin. Even Christians women are dressing more and more immodestly, and sometimes this isn’t because they actively seek out immodest attire. Most of the time, it is because immodest attire is the only thing available for them. Ever wonder why that is?
Think about it, if you were going to oppose masculinity in the culture, how would you do it? Men are extraordinarily visual creatures. We are attracted to the aesthetic nature of the female body, more so than our female counterparts are attracted to aesthetics. This explains why men are disproportionately affected by the porn epidemic. We like to see women; for better or worse, this is the genetic makeup with which we were born. Now, how do you exploit this?
The devil has attempted to disarm men by making the culture in which we live pornographic in nature. If women dress more and more immodestly, young men, especially, will take notice. With jeans that look like they are painted on and shorts that could just as easily be underwear becoming more prevalent, we have an army of hyper-sexualized young men that think more and more in terms of sexual attraction.
In steps feminism. Specifically, Third-wave Feminism. These women look at the hyper-sexualized men around them and scream at the top of their lungs, “RAPE CULTURE!!” They claim that women are being raped by men who simply look at their bare legs or tight-fitting clothing. Men, unable to defend themselves, find themselves on the losing end of a de facto trial. Because they can offer no satisfactory defense to this repugnant group, men are forced to apologize, repent of their “male privilege,” and bend the knee to “girl power.”
I am not saying that rape is not a real issue. I am not saying that any woman, or man for that matter, deserves to be raped. I wish that on no one. Rape is one of the most egregious crimes that can possibly be committed and it ought to be punished to the severest degree possible by the state. What I want to do is to bring attention to a serious issue: the men of the culture are being systematically neutered by the ever-present threat of being accused of an imagined rape and being unable to answer the charge. Man’s God-given biology has been turned into a weapon to be used against him at every turn.
All the while, Satan laughs at men who are caught in an inescapable catch-22. If a man says, “I have raped you,” when it is obvious he hasn’t, he proves their case. If he, on the other hand, says that he wished there was somewhere for him to turn that wasn’t filled with pornographic imagery, he is labeled a misogynist as well as a rapist. No matter what, it is his fault. Because men are increasingly in this position, women are becoming, more and more, the leaders of our culture. We saw how that worked out in the Garden. Men were meant to lead. Women were meant to follow. Clothing is just one of the many ways the creational order is being subverted by the powers of darkness.
The world, bleak though it may seem, is under the lordship of Jesus Christ and He will reign forever and ever! His enemies are being forced to come to grips with their inevitable defeat more and more each day. The gospel is the solution to these problems. We don’t need more rules for girls and women to follow when going to their closets. Rather, we need them to have regenerated hearts that consider what they can do to build up their neighbors. This is a heart issue, and Jesus is the ultimate heart doctor. If it is the case that you have not seen the beauty and splendor of his gospel, I encourage you to repent of your sins and trust in Him for the salvation of your immortal soul. It may appear that we are losing, but Christ has already won the war.
Join the winning side.

Though controversial, I stand with Ashton’s article. I too have seen this happen in our culture. As a young man, who wishes to remain pure, faithful, and keep my eyes from being stained from the lust that man is capable of (both for God and my future wife), I see these problems and I believe that it’s about time someone spoke up. — James Smetanin
